Things To Do Column 12

I've heard a lot of new suggestions of Things To Do since the book was published, both from the people I've met and also through the website. Ideas have ranged from the sensible (Walk the Red Carpet at the Oscars) through to just plain daft (Squeeze a Lemon in Your Eye). One of the most popular Thing To Do suggestions has been Reveal Your Most Embarrassing Moment, this often leads into a avalanche of stories featuring nakedness, bodily functions and being caught in the act, none of which I'm going to repeat here but they've been great to listen to...

Other suggestions have included: Shower in a Waterfall, Streak in a Public Place, Ride a Wild Steer, Start Your Own Cult, Zorb*, and Fake Your Own Death.

Some of the funniest suggestions I've received have been from children. I asked school children aged between 9-13 at a local school to see what are some of the Things To Do that they'd like to do and I got a varied selection, these included: When Annoyed Stare and Stare Until Tears Come, Block the Tolit with Potatoes, Eat a Live Crab, Put Perfume in Your Dads Pance, Get a Girlfriend, 5 Roast Dinners, 7 Fried Eggs and 10 Mud Pies (?) and my personal favourite Take Your Dog to the Pictures.

I was hoping to get a Thing To Do into the book that featured Middlesbrough. At the time I couldn't find the right suggestion to feature, but since then one has arose that I can finally mention Middlesbrough.

Thing To Do New! - Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge

Teesside and Australia are linked in more ways than one - the first reason is the most obvious, Captain Cook. You can't go anywhere in Australia, New Zealand or the Pacific Islands without him getting a mention. He pretty much discovered and named everything along the East Coast of Australia, although he completely missed Sydney Harbour itself and sailed on by. The second reason is due to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

In 1924, Dorman Long and Co of Middlesbrough won the contract to construct the Bridge. Almost all of the Steel used in the construction was imported from Teesside, And for this reason, climb the bridge - along the way you'll see that almost every steel beam has the word MIDDLESBROUGH in huge letters moulded onto them. So if your from Middlesbrough, the main reason to climb the bridge is this, the magnificent views and the uplifting experience are secondary!

* Zorbing - An adventure sport which involves climbing inside a huge hamster ball and being launched down a hill
