Redwell brewery began to can their beer in 2015 and I created
three designs for Redwell, a main design for the can and two
other designs for the bar runners.

The steam lager can design was born after a look around the brewery
and seeing the brewing process. The equipment reminded me of the
stages of a rocket. It was like NASA for beer and the idea for the can
label was born.

With the brewing process in mind, The Saturn V rocket design starts
at the tip of the rocket with:

Malt • Unicorn Tears • Water • Hot Liquor Tank • Mash Tun • Copper • Whirlpool • Cooler • Fermentation Tanks ... and the process ends with
the beer in the can.

To convey the feel of the prodiminately metaillic silver equipment
used in the process I wanted to show this in the design with the
silver of the can showing through.

In May 2016 my design won the
BEST CAN DESIGN winner at the #indiebeercan awards 2016
judged by Sean Thomas, creative director
at leading design agency JKR and Claudio Vecchio, creative partner
at design studio Midday.

Sean said: “The Redwell can made us smile from every angle. The design
had a great tone of voice and instantly appealed to us aesthetically. There
was loads to discover, from the bottle hidden in the hour glass to the
branding hidden in the stars – it all came together to secure its place as our
winner. The label also did its job, telling us what the beer was about: we
knew exactly what to expect when opening the can and we weren’t
disappointed at all.”

From over 130 entrants for the Indie Beer Can Festival, 36 semi-finalists
were selected before 13 were chosen as finalists.
